How a PT deck runs

The deck is propped to the propping design with the stressing sequence in mind, because a PT slab is stripped in stages as the tendons are stressed rather than all at once. Reinforcement is placed around the tendon profiles: support steel to hold the ducts at the profile heights, anti-burst steel at the anchorages, and edge and trimmer bars to the detail. The pour is booked against the engineer's inspection, and stressing follows the cylinder results.

Coordination with the stressing contractor

Tendon layouts arrive as shop drawings from the PT contractor. Our steel fixers place the support steel to those profiles and hold the pour until the PT contractor has checked the ducts and anchorages. After the pour, stripping and back-propping follow the stressing sequence the engineer sets, not the calendar.

What changes the price

PT slabs carry their own reinforcement rate because the support and anti-burst detail takes longer per tonne than conventional slab steel. Formwork is priced per square metre by element as usual, with the staged strip allowed for. Concrete is placed per square metre; the pour is often larger because PT decks are thinner and span further.

Where PT slabs turn up

Apartment buildings above a commercial ground floor, car park decks, and office floors where the column grid is wide. Transfer slabs are often PT for the same reason. Each is priced on the drawings; send the structural set and the PT shop drawings together.

Questions builders ask

Do you stress the tendons?

No. The stressing contractor supplies and stresses the tendons. We form the deck, place the support and anti-burst steel, pour the slab and follow the stressing sequence for stripping.

Why is PT reinforcement priced separately?

The support steel, anti-burst and edge reinforcement around the tendon profiles take longer to place per tonne than a conventional mat, so the rate reflects the time.

Can a PT deck be stripped early?

Stripping follows the engineer's stressing sequence and the cylinder results. Back-propping stays as the design requires.
